Over the years, we have received quite a few inquiries regarding "AN" fittings. AN (Air Force - Navy Aeronautical Standard) and AND (Air Force - Navy Aeronautical Design Standard) are standards used by the U.S. Military in aviation applications. AN fittings are manufactured to meet the above standards. These fittings include the 37° flare, flareless, hose connections, "banjo" type fittings, specialized flange fittings, pipe fittings, and other types of connections. There are many frequently asked questions about AN 37° flare fittings and how they relate to their industrial 37° flare counterpart, the SAE/ISO 37° flare fittings, so I thought I would share the background and differences between these fittings.

Corrosive environments and extreme temperatures, high or low, present challenges for everyday fittings, especially in high-pressure applications. JIC fittings in larger sizes do not provide an adequate pressure rating, and O-rings in ORFS connections are susceptible to erosion. Extreme environments require extreme solutions.
If you are repairing or maintaining hydraulic equipment, you make and re-make connections daily. You know to use plugs and caps to plug open ports and cap disconnected hoses, in order to keep the the dirt out and oil in. This method works for most connections, but when it comes to flanges most mechanics' oil containment method is to shove a rag into the open port, and another in the end of the disconnected hose (or tube assembly).

Depending on your equipment, an oil change can be a complicated, potentially messy process. In many automated manufacturing applications, assessing potential safety risks posed by unexpected power failure is an essential part of overall system design. You need to take appropriate measures in order to reduce the risk of injury to machinery operators and other personnel, and prevent damage to the products being assembled. In the case of any kind of unexpected interruption in operation, the equipment must meet safety standards that prevent unsafe situations from occurring.
Last year, Parker introduced the Gen II style hydraulic cylinders, which replace the legacy 2H and 3H series. This change brought many improvements to the cylinders' delivery times and longevity. So how do you convert your old part numbers to the Gen II cylinder part numbers? The short answer is that Parker already did the work for you - for the most part.
A cylinder attached to your equipment has broken down and needs to be repaired or replaced. Before you can get it fixed, however, you will need to identify the type of cylinder that you have. If you’re lucky, you will be able to find a part number and other OEM information located somewhere on the cylinder body. From there, a Google search will most likely lead you to a distributor who can sell you a replacement, or at least parts to fix the broken cylinder.
When choosing between a hose assembly and tube assembly for a hydraulic application, there are a few basic questions that must first be answered:

In this blog, we discussed that unless a hose is specifically designated as either conductive or non-conductive, you must assume that the electrical properties of the hose are not controlled during the manufacturing process, and that conductivity of the hose can change with each production run without notice. In this blog, let’s look at what can be done to make your industrial hose assembly electrically conductive for the purpose of dissipating static electricity buildup.

In a previous blog from January 2014, Don’t Kill Your Pneumatic System With Bad Air, we wrote about how water, dirt and oil contamination can damage your machine and cause it to run inefficiently. Rust, dust and other impurities can clog air systems and contribute to premature wear and tear on seals and other components. To provide the purest air quality possible, a combination of filters should be connected to the air-flow to capture these impurities before they contaminate the system. However, each compressed air system has unique needs – what may be right for one system may not be the correct choice for another application, when considering environmental factors or fitting a system into a tight space.
Hose and coupling connection is critical to the safe performance of any hose assembly, but the practice of using hose and couplings from different manufacturers to fabricate industrial hose assemblies poses some underappreciated risks.
Parker’s Fluid System Connectors Division (FSC) is implementing a conversion of FC701 and FC702 flow controls in fractional sizes. Replacement options for FC701 are Parker/Legris FCM 731, FCC731, and FC705. The replacement option for FC702 is FC708.

Early Warnings of Hydraulic System Troubles:
- Slow Operation
- Increased Noise
- Elevated Temperature
Does this sound familiar?
- Your hose is exposed to temperatures below -50°F or above +300°F.
- Your hose’s cover is cracking.
- Your hose is exposed to harsh chemicals.
- You keep replacing the same hose over and over.
- You wish you could use a metal (rigid) tube, but you need the flexibility of a hose.
If this is you, stop replacing the same hose over and over – go for a flexible metal hose!
What You Don't Know About Hoses Can Kill You...Because electrical conductivity or non-conductivity is not a consideration for many applications, hose manufacturers do not commonly publicize hose electrical resistance ratings. That being the case, most people do not think about conductivity when selecting a hose; some just assume that all rubber hoses are electrically non-conductive. After all, rubber is non-conductive material, right? Wrong.

Many mechanics are not trained on how to correctly measure and specify hose length. As a result, a replacement hose may end up being either little shorter or little longer than the original part. When inches matter, the confusion about properly measuring hose length can result in delays and extra expense.
Brake Line Thread Identification: What it Entails
Thread identification means learning the thread size and pitch. The thread size is determined by the outside diameter of the male thread, or the inside diameter of the female thread. Pitch refers to the distance from one thread groove to the next (measured from crest to crest).
When replacing your brake lines, the replacement brake hose assembly does not need to look exactly the same as the original brake line, but make sure that the brake lines (especially the new brake hose fittings) will fit the surrounding area where they will be installed. Sometimes the brake hose fitting can interfere with another part of your brakes. Pay attention to any tight spots when removing your brake lines and communicate any restrictions to the vendor who will be fabricating your replacement brake lines.
